"Overwhelmed"

The last few hours had been daunting. More than 35,000 UEF forces have been trying to evacuate thousands of people into the Redwood Forest, which is a hundred miles north of a large concentration of newly spawned alien biomonsters. The winged ones, they've been the worst; it was felt the forest would be a fair refuge from the slaughter that was taking place from their quick attacks. While the larger trees provide a wall to human backs, soldiers stand at the ready with a variety of armor piercing shells, which are the only things that seem to work against these red and yellow eyed flying creatures. With apprehensive expressions, citizens are huddling close to the soldiers for protection.

David stares in horror as the ship's computer detects thousands of larva rising from deep within the Earth and moving toward the surface of the forest perimeter. Taschin's shaking his head and muttering to himself.

David: I've got to go down there and help out!

Taschin strongly shakes his head and looks at David.

Taschin: No way! As strong as you've been getting lately, the situation's just too dangerous. That huge new wave of larva will get to the surface in about 10 minutes. You'll get trapped down there! I need you here to help me with the teleportation system; as soon as we get the modifications done, we can start teleporting the creatures into space. Look, if we work together, we can finish in an hour or so.

David gives Taschin a somber look while he looks up from staring at a hologram of a pretty girl.

David: There's something you don't know. Ariana, my sister, is down in the forest. I have to get her out of there! The teleporter's off line for your modifications, so I must go to the surface and personally escort her to relative safety. You'll have to finish the project yourself--I'm losing time.

As Taschin walks away shaking his head and muttering again, David takes control of the ship's navigation, heading for where he's detected his sister, right in the middle of the forest. Wasting no time, the anxious Arn finds an exit and jumps out of the vehicle about a half mile above Ariana's location. Freefalling for a moment, he slows his descent and watches while the ground quickly looms larger in his field of vision. Slowing to a near stop, David reroutes his momentum and flies 200 feet toward her. As she stares at him with shock and then excitement, Dave reaches the ground near her and is met with a large hug. Ariana begins to cry and David comforts his dark haired sister, assuring her that he'll get them both out of there.

Having hacked into the UEF systems, Dave's commandeered all 5 Rummager II's. Each one's just been fitted with dual heavy duty gatling guns and each craft's carrying about 10,000 rounds of armor piercing shells. The ships arrive very rapidly and not a moment too soon. Hundreds of the winged monsters descend from above the tops of the trees and quickly fly in David's direction. While he shields Ariana's body, Dave's trying to stop the creature's forward momentum and is having some success. Slowing the huge demonic birds to a near stop, the Arn watches as the gatling guns are tearing them to shreds. Bullets are flying everywhere. David uses the Kivon to create a force shield around himself and his sister, but one of the armor piercing shells has too much momentum and gets through. Slamming through his heart, the projectile rips out of his back and travels through Ariana's body while she screams from the intense pain. Her blood's splattered on the tree as her heart's been seriously torn. While Ariana collapses on the ground, David's already repaired his body and is focusing on his sister. Ariana's blood can be seen flying off the tree and moving back into her as he rapidly heals her intense wounds. Within two seconds, she's back on her feet and is extremely startled by her recovery. Touching her chest where the wound was, she's amazed that death hasn't overcome her. Dave grabs her arm to bring her back to alertness. With a quick hug, he looks into her eyes.

David: Come on, I've got to get you out of here. This place is about to turn into a bloodbath. There's thousands of these creatures coming in 10 or 15 minutes. I'll try to fly you out of here.

Ariana looks at David with some awe.

Ariana: How far is it to get out of here?

Wasting no time, Dave grabs hold of his sister.

David: About 5 miles. I'm gonna try to get us on top of one of the Rummager II's. Maybe we can hitch a ride.

Struggling, David manages to slowly raise himself and his sister the three hundred feet to the top of a ship. A large flock of the monster birds rapidly moves in their direction. Not having time to settle on the top, David's forced to move the Rummager II prematurely. While Dave and his sister loose balance, they fly off the side of the vehicle, which slams into the approaching wave of creatures, killing some of them. The ones that weren't killed instantly are getting shot full of holes by the other ships. Barely managing to keep himself and Ariana from slamming into the ground, Dave decides it best that he do the flying and they move through the air at about 20 mph. As he continues to fly, David realizes Taschin's contacting him via the Vartaxian ship's computer and he begins to communicate telepathically.

Taschin: I've got incoming! About 7 ships that my database tells me are of Auto Builder origin.

David: What?

Taschin: The Auto Builders. This race, the Giwayzion, built this automated manufacturing system to prepare worlds for colonization of its people. The automated system and its many robots killed all the Giwayzion settlers on this planet Ditaria VII and the Giwayzion people have been at war with their own creation ever since. I think the war started a few years ago and both sides are evenly matched. It seems their technology's young, not much more advanced than Earth technology; still, I'm not thinking this is good. I can't imagine these machines are here for a social visit.

David: How long?

Taschin: Ten minutes. I'll alert the UEF. Maybe they can shoot them down. I'm getting the teleporter conversion done a lot faster than I thought I could. It looks like that'll take about 30 minutes. That is, if we can dispense with these Auto Builder ships; they might pack more of a punch than I think. Fortunately, your UEF's just finished making a few of those new 570 terawatt ground mounted fusion cannons.

David: Your technology databases have helped Earth scientists tremendously. We can't thank you enough for help with the fusion cannons. Anyway, good luck. Let me get back to the matter down here. It's not looking too good up ahead!

Hundreds of the monster birds are flying toward David and Ariana from in front of them. The Rummagers are following closely behind and open fire while the debris from some of the creatures' remains are splattering on the trees ahead. The Arn makes a quick left turn to escape a large group of the alien monsters, who are getting through the barrage of heavy duty shells. Ariana's eyes pop wide open as one of the large ground dwelling beasts appears about fifty feet in front them. Then, several more come bounding through the woods at numerous encircling angles. Shaped somewhat like a garbage truck, only larger, they advance at close to 15 mph. While the strange patterns on their rippled bright red and very dark blue skin become more discernable with the monster's forward progress, the head of each prepares to strike at David and his sister. Three strong-looking mouths jut out a foot from each monster's ugly triangular face in the form of sturdy, flexible tubes that lead to powerful-looking ant-like forward facing pincers. Opening horizontally, those pincers appear ready to attack. Vertically oriented, crescent shaped green eyes stare menacingly at David, who's climbed to twenty feet and is still rising. Dave's looking at the closest creature's head and time seems to stand still ; he can't help but cringe. Staring hypnotically at the triangular face, he notices how the chin tapers off to a nasty arrangement of serrated spears. The eyes, which have the crescent tips facing inward, seem incredibly spooky as various shades of fluorescent green swirl around at random. Placed near the upper corners of the triangle, those eyes begin to squint and the monster lets out a series of very unnerving screams from each pair of jaws. While David and Ariana uneasily contemplate the three distinct yells out of its mouths, the creature rears its forty foot-long body, taking a swipe at them with one of its ten elephant trunk-like legs, which are spaced evenly across its midsection. About 20 feet long and 5 feet thick, the somewhat hollow leg slams forcefully into David and Ariana, sending them flying a few hundred feet. Crashing hard into the ground, the dazed Arn struggles to regain consciousness. Painfully watching one of the large creatures taking in human flesh through one of its hollow legs, he springs to his feet and revives Ariana, taking her back up into the air. The monster that hit them is lunging in their direction from a hundred feet away. There are two people in its path and both scream in terror as they're instantly bit in half by two sets of pincers. While the extremely vicious creature tries to jump and swipe at them, Dave's managed to get over a hundred feet high and barely eludes the attack. The victory's short lived as the flying creatures are attacking in force. David's grabbed hold of a huge tree and Ariana's clutching on to him with all her strength, while she looks down apprehensively at the 175 foot drop to the ground.
