17Taking control of numerous UEF machinery, David's able to destroy all of the spiders; but, only after they manage to give birth to thousands of larva. The frustrated Arn's attempts to kill the offspring's about 70% effective, while the rest borough too far underground and survive.
With some time on his hands, Dave concentrates on determining who's calling the shots for the UEF. After hours of scanning conversations by means of the Kivon, he realizes that Logan's secretly in charge of the Earth forces. Taping into the computer on Taschin's ship, Dave teleports a shocked Logan into a vacant room on that vehicle. As David walks through the wall in front of the secret UEF leader, Logan's mouth drops wide open in disbelief.
Logan: What the hell's this!
David: Relax! I've brought you hear to talk.
Logan: Alright David. I thought you were dead. If that's really you and not some kind of optical trick or otherwise.
David: Oh, it's me! Who do you think killed all those spiders? That was a lot of hard work!
Logan: Well, I guess that makes sense. But, it's hard to know what to believe anymore.
David: I know, I know. But, you have to trust your instincts. I'm David Ash, and not an imposter. This alien ship, that took me a few months ago, is very friendly, and very important to our immediate survival. You need to meet Taschin, the owner of the ship, who's a friend of mine and probably one of the Earth's best chances for survival in the near term.
Almost on cue, Taschin comes walking through a wall in front of Logan and the UEF leader's eyes nearly pop out of their sockets. With a brief introduction to Taschin and a quick explanation about his Vartaxian race, Logan calms down and seems to deal with the situation well.
David: Anyway, we're gonna need the cooperation of the UEF if we're ever gonna succeed in killing the offspring of the spiders. It's imperative that you stop any attempts at attacking this ship. We need to get close to the surface and be able to use the ship's weapons and facilities to fight whatever comes back up.
Logan: Alright. We did witness some of the larva coming out of the spiders and saw them going into the ground. But, won't they just produce more spiders we can kill.
Taschin: No! They've morphed into a new life form and we're not sure what that's going to entail.
Logan: Great! I don't like surprises. Can't you do something with the Kivon?
David: They've dug too deep in the ground. That won't stop me from trying, but still, there are certainly limits to my skills.
Dave gives Logan a quick lecture on TNA and explains how the ship's computer's busy trying to extrapolate what type of life form might emerge, but with no success. There are just too many unknowns and no computer, no matter how powerful, can work on such problems.
While the days pass, David and Taschin develop a better relationship with Logan and the UEF. Mysteriously, nothing's emerged from the ground as they'd have anticipated. No one knows what to think about the larva, but apprehension runs rampant through everyone's mind. David continues to work on his skills with the Kivon and, while Autumn arrives, he manages to walk on water; he can now lift his own body weight.
Winter comes and everyone's pretty much written the larva off. But, one day, everything changes. With no warning, the larva spring to the surface and quickly spawn a new breed of creature. David, Taschin, and the UEF look on in horror as some bizarre looking multicolored life form that's 15 feet tall and nearly as wide rips its way out of the 25-foot-long larva sacks. Incredibly strange looking two foot tall black flying creatures, with six foot wingspans, dislodge themselves from multiple hose-like appendages sticking out of the large beasts. As the flying creatures begin moving through the air at over 100 mph, they show amazingly sharp teeth on large, nasty looking heads and long, sharp talons on a muscular hand strongly attached to a forearm emanating from each of the two powerful wings. Within moments, the flying monsters descend upon the first humans, rapidly devouring them while the victims helplessly scream in pain and terror. At an incredible rate, the bloodied flying creatures become very fat in their stomach areas as if they're filling a large pouch. After gorging their prey, they fly back to the large creatures and begin to regurgitate much of what they've eaten into the flexible appendages of the big monsters. Staring in awe, the onlookers can't believe what's happening and can only conclude that some form of symbiotic relationship exists between the large creatures and the alien birds. Dave's desperately trying to destroy both forms of life and isn't having much luck, which strikes him as very strange. They try shooting at the monsters with lasers and microwaves and nothing's happening. Taschin's computer can only tell them each creature's skin works off principles that have never been encountered before and seems to absorb energy somehow. Dave and the others can only stare in horror at the events that are rapidly unfolding in the worst way, right in front of their eyes.
