10A strange object materializes in the room that David and Taschin are in and
begins to fall from the ceiling at a very slow pace. The alien seems to nod once
in appreciation that it's going the way he planned. Looking at the object with
an inquisitive expression, Dave lifts a brow and shakes his head as he's rather
puzzled at the nature of Taschin's device.
Taschin: Good, good. Alright,
this extremely light device is known as a Tenge. It works like a parachute and
would normally fall to the ground in about two minutes. Your task is to keep it
from falling. Since you've never successfully used the Kivon before, let me
explain what you need to do. As Trilan pointed out, the Kivon taps into zero
point energy. In order to harness that energy, you must completely clear your
mind of any thoughts and achieve perfect concentration. Even thinking about
having to concentrate's enough to disrupt your endeavors with the Kivon. There
can be no interference with your will, whatsoever. No emotions, no fear, no
distractions; just pure will, pure attention. I want you to perform a quick
mental exercise. You must clear your mind of any thoughts for ten seconds. In
that time, nothing must enter your mind; no music, no background noise, no
impulses--nothing. I'll tell you when the time's up. Go!
Dave fails
several times at the challenge, but inevitably's able to completely clear his
mind of any distractions.
Taschin: Excellent! Now you must apply that
level of concentration to the Kivon. If you're going to be able to tap into its
powers, you must come to sense your surroundings. From the info Trilan gave me,
when you become skilled with it, you should be able to sense molecules, atoms,
and all forms of particles from great distances. You can do things with these
particles, such as speed up kinetic energy to build heat, or move objects
through the air, including yourself. For your first task, concentrate on the
Tenge, which I shall lift back toward the ceiling. Feel the matter of the Tenge,
and feel the matter inside the room. Focus on pushing the energy under the Tenge
in an upward direction. Have faith in yourself that you can do this. Use your
will and keep your mind clear, like before. Alright, begin now.
Dave
watches the Tenge slowly falling toward the ground. It's already dropped about
halfway to the floor. Trying to clear his mind of any distracting thoughts, Dave
can't help but occasionally feel ridiculous at what he's trying to do. Thoughts
of impossibility continue to plague his efforts of focusing on the task at hand.
David watches as the Tenge approaches within inches of the ground. Desperately,
he tries to summon his will to push it upward. Inevitably, the Tenge falls to
the floor and Dave shakes his head in disappointment.
David: I'm not
getting this at all!
Taschin: It requires tremendous patience. Just
believe in yourself and you'll ultimately succeed. This is a good lesson in
perseverance for you. Don't allow yourself to fail!
Taschin lifts the
Tenge back toward the ceiling and releases it. David seems more determined than
ever as a look of extreme intensity can be seen on his face. Still, the Tenge
continues to fall slowly toward the ground. Inch by inch, it moves toward the
floor and gently falls on it without making a sound.
David: Put it back
up again. I'm pissed now!
Taschin: You have to remember to suppress your
emotions. The Tarx evoke a tremendous amount of hatred. You can't allow that to
interfere with your skills, that is, when you acquire them. Always remember
that! It's easier said than done, to say the least.
Taschin lifts the
Tenge back up to the ceiling and releases it again. Dave takes a deep breath and
focuses on the strange object. This time there's little expression on his face
with the exception of utter determination. As the Tenge continues to drop, it
reaches within a foot of the ground and is still sinking. David's eyes seem to
squint a bit as he becomes incredibly fixated on the still falling object.
Approaching within two inches of the floor, the Tenge begins to hover in place.
Taschin begins to smile as he sees his creation begin to slowly rise from the
ground. It begins to accelerate and suddenly races up, slamming into the
ceiling.
David: Yea! Tremendous! Now I understand! I see how it works!
Taschin begins to laugh out of happiness, and Dave begins to laugh, as
well.
Taschin: Alright! You've finally done it! Before we get too excited, let's do
it a few more times. This way, you won't forget what you did.
David:
Let's do it!
Dave renews his concentration on the object, which's now
within a foot of the floor. Immediately, he's able to quickly raise it to the
ceiling again.
Taschin: This is getting too easy. I'll start increasing
the weight of the Tenge through the use of an energy field. Let's see how you do
if I increase the weight to one quarter of a pound.
Taschin lifts his
creation back to the ceiling and releases it. The Tenge is falling considerably
faster now, but it begins to slow as David exerts his will upon it. While the
object begins to hover, then slowly rise, Dave grins out of the left side of his
mouth in smugness. Watching the Tenge hit the ceiling, the Vartaxian nods in
admiration of how quickly David's catching on. Taschin increases the weight to
one pound. It takes him a few tries, but ultimately, Dave's able to lift the
object back to the ceiling.
Taschin: I think you've got it down. How do
you feel?
David: Exhilarated! Still, I'm pretty tired from this
incredible day.
Taschin: Hmmm. You're going to have to learn how to push
your body harder. If you're under attack from the Tarx, you might not get a
chance to rest for long periods. It'll become critical, you use the Kivon to
tweak your physiology. I think, it's time you learned to use the Kivon under
extreme duress. You're going to have to escape from your binds by turning off
the field generator. But, there's a twist.
David: How's that?
David's attention's promptly diverted by the abrupt disappearance of the
Tenge. Suddenly, grayish-looking water begins to cascade down the walls of the
room at a rate of about 30 gallons per second. Dave's eyes nearly pop out of
their sockets as he anxiously stares at the water that rapidly washes over the
floor.
David: What the hell are you doing! You can't be serious!
Taschin: I'm totally serious! Again, you need to learn how to stay
focused under intense pressure. Remember to bury your emotions, especially your
fear.
David: What! It's not like you're going to let me die or
something! That makes no sense!
Taschin: You're on your own. I'm going
to leave and trust you'll know what to do. I have complete confidence in your
ability to get yourself out of this situation. You have about 15 minutes before
the water engulfs your body. I'd suggest you get started.
David: Wait a
second!
As Taschin disappears through the wall, Dave realizes his words
are in vain. The water's a few inches deep and rising at a barely perceptible
rate. Still, David's desperately trying not to panic as he attempts to enhance
his senses through the Kivon. Beginning to see various structures around the
ship and the movement of atoms and other particles, he looks for some sort of
switch or control panel. The search isn't going well as nothing appears to make
much sense to him; everything's very different from what humans would build. As
Dave's concentration's broken by the notion he's a few feet off the ground, the
Arn begins to sweat profusely, realizing the water's almost a foot deep now. He
tries to summon all his strength and enhance it with the device in an effort to
force his way out of his binds. It doesn't seem to be paying off as the binds
won't budge, at all. Dave begins to curse out Taschin in his mind, but promptly
realizes he's just wasting time. Refocusing his attention, he resumes his search
of the ship for a switch of some sort. Minutes seem like hours as David
helplessly watches the flood slowly reach his feet. While the water begins to
climb up his body, he still sees no sign of any kind of control panel. The
desperate Arn begins to search for Taschin in the hopes he can tap into the
nanochips implanted in the aliens head. Dave reasons, if he can work through the
chips, he might be able to gain control of the fields. There's no sign of the
Vartaxian anywhere. Apparently, there's some sort of force field shielding
Taschin off from David's greatly enhanced senses. The Arn loses concentration
again as he notices the flood's reached his knees. Dave's panic increases
significantly and a feeling he's unsuccessfully tried everything creeps into his
mind. Violently, David struggles in another effort to forcefully break out of
the binds. As with everything else, it doesn't seems to make any difference. The
water continues to climb with no mercy.
